A statement of purpose (SOP) is a key component of your Canadian study permit application. It is a story of who you are, what you have accomplished (qualifications, work experience), what your career goals are and the reasons behind choosing your study program. A statement of purpose helps visa officers understand your background, guage your intent to come to Canada and make a decision on your study permit application. You have to keep in mind that Canadian study permit application assessments are purely assessed on documentation and that there is no face-to-face interview with a visa officer. Your SOP can make or break your application. Here are some proven tips on how to write a compelling statement of purpose for your Canadian study permit application:
Keep it original: Just like how no two people are the same, your SOP should be a reflection of yourself. Never copy or purchase someone else’s work. Write your SOP yourself because nobody knows you as well as yourself. This is the best way to ensure that your study permit application is a true reflection of yourself. A few key areas to cover are:
Details of the chosen university and program: Outline the aspects that attracted you to the educational institute (peer support, global reputation, world renowned faculty, etc.), and the study program (tip: look at program objective, course outline, career outlook, from the program weblink. You should be able to answer, “why this program and why not another program from a different educational institute?”
Explain your motivations: Explain your motivations for choosing Canada as a study destination. Research the particular city/community you plan to reside in. Mention local aspects that appeal to you. Demonstrate genuine interest in the Canadian culture, society, and values.
Be clear about returning home: Although, a vast majority of international students have immigration in the back of their minds, this should not be discussed or implied on the statement of purpose. Instead, write about your plans after graduating from your study program and or getting work experience (under the postgraduate work permit program). You should have a good idea of the job prospects in your home country and where you will fit in. Talk about how you plan to leverage your Canadian education to compete in the job market in your home country.
Length: Ideally, your SOP for a Canadian study permit application should be between 500 and 1,000 words.
